Probably a bigger alternator will do but if you keep seeing weird electrical issues, look into grounding and noise filters.

Semiconductor switching devices produce significant harmonic voltages as they abruptly chop voltage waveforms during their transition between conducting and cutoff states. Inverter circuits are notorious for producing harmonics, and are in widespread use today. An adjustable-speed motor drive is one application that makes use of inverter circuits, often using pulse width modulation (PWM) synthesis to produce the AC output voltage. Various synthesis methods produce different harmonic spectra. Regardless of the method used to produce an AC output voltage from a DC input voltage, harmonics will be present on both sides of the inverter and must often be mitigated.

Rob, I posted links for you on this subject. If you don't think it's relevant, consider the keywords mentioned, 3rd harmonic is most significant. Well your engine fires 3 times per rotor revolution. Other keywords, rectifiers(alternator), transformer(ignition coil), capacitors(msd boxes and cabling), generators(alternator), DC supply rails etc. Your probably thinking I'm nuts but I'm not joking. You might have to break out an oscilloscope or contact a lead engineer at MSD for assistance. Solution might be simple as installing some filters, mods to your casebook cablingand grounding. But your engine has alot going on electrically compared to the average piston engine. Also rotary engines are notorious for particularly powerful "harmonics"at high rpms which have been known to "sheer housing bolts"

You might be getting weird harmonic voltage spikes in your electrical system due to all the capacitive discharge digital msd boxes which do multi sparks, which cuts in and out at different RPMs, also keep in mind you have 8 of those MSD boxes and 8 ignition coils, plus I dunno how many fuel injectors that are digitally pulsed with varying frequency and duty cycles. This is a common problem seen with digital ac motor speed controllers aka VFD Drives. They use digital circuits to pulse high voltage DC at varying frequency and duty cycle up create artificial sign waves to drive. AC motors with variable speeds. The harmonics created on the power lines can disrupt computers and other electronics if the harmonics are not dampened out or by filters or properly engineered cabling. Cable length and terminations play a. big role.

Some guys have their electric radiator fans shutoff at him full throttle to reduce alternator losses and current draw on the system. Usually you have good airflow at full throttle and you rarely are full load with zero speed

I guess 12 figures is widget because your alternator has 6 phases instead of the usual 3 phases, OR, you paralleled 4 diodes pretty phase to increase current capacity. Diodes have a standard voltage drop and once in forward bias conducting. It doesn't change much with amperage or temperature

Many old drag cars had no battery, many sprint cars today have no battery, they rink magneto ignition/distributors that are self powered, they generate their own voltage and energy with a small generator inside the distributor. That's why you notice then push starting sprint cars when they stall on the track

as someone with knowledge of alternators, i just wanna say he has built a good alt but his explanation behind it is shit... its sounds like an "its too technical for you to understand" explanation. that is a three-phase alt with full-wave rectifier at the load end of the alt for dc conversion. plain and muhfucken simple... you can't really make what I just described so go buy it from them =P

I prefer Mechman, but that has to do with them being local. Either way dc, Mechman, there's also Ohio generator as well, all 3 are great. we use these in high amperage car audio applications. 12, and 16 volts in car powering many amps, charging bats, lights, head unit, processors, etc.

I'm just wondering, you're not afraid of instability due your signature on the pulley? I know it's maybe like around 1 gram. Due higher rev's / speeds is more weight.

I'd bridge the sense wire to battery positive. Bcs you want 14,7 at the BATTERY to charge it sufficiently. Run big wires positive from alt to battery, battery to fusebox + starter. Negative from engine block or bracket that attaches to the alt and bolt it down to a strong bar/tube on the chassis. And the voltage drop on upshifts results from dropping engine + alternator RPM's. the field current is set to put out for ex. 14,7V @ 12000 alternator RPM's. After upshift the RPM's drop to like 8000 and the regulator has to adjust the field current higher to suit it for lower RPM's @ still 14,7V. That reaction takes some time. Best way to filter these dips is a LiFePo4 battery of around 20Ah for a lead acid /AGM delete. But LiFePo4 batteries cant take more then 14,6 volts short periods or 14,4V long term. There are even ready made high quality LiFePo4 starter batteries in a carbon fiber case wit bluetooth disabeling/enabeling, external emergency cut of wire from company called LiteBlox @LiteBlox .

Great video and nice intercooler core looks like the one im running as a radiator on my FZR1000 buggy (lets not discuss that the intercooler cost half what i paid for the bottom end rebuild on the motor)....and wonder how long before we get new starter tech that keeps up with quality alternators now available.

Those guys build some amazing alternators. I was really impressed with the Denso 6 phase stators.😉 A *LOT* more output in the same space as a normal 3 phase stator. I'm kind of curious how much horsepower it takes to drive one of those at full rated output? (i.e. 320 amps) Pretty cool tech there, and very nice machine work!!😁👍

@Chris Hull Just for grins.. I used to have a 'boost pack' that I built years ago that had a 5hp. Briggs & Stratton driving a 60 amp internally regulated GM Delco 10si alternator. It took everything that engine had to maintain 13.8 v @ 50 amps!😉 (most likely due to inefficiencies in the alternator itself)

P = Current x Voltage. 1HP = 0.7457 KWatt 745 Watt at 12V = 62 AMPs 745 Watt at 15V = 50 AMPs So 1 to 4 HP would be be delivered to the battery/bus and 1 to 2 HP in less than idea efficiency/mechanical losses.

Rob, at 10,000 rpm your alternator is spinning depending on your crazy overdrive ratio 40 to 80k. The joke is most alternators generate max power at 2000 to 3000 (alternator rotor) rpm. Meaning its all wasted rpm, power robbing inertia spinning that slug is foolish. DC power should have a dyno sheet showing voltage & amps at various rpm outputs.

The three phase full wave rectifier circuit has 6 diodes, but I see that the alternator often has three more to form a half-wave rectifier for the field winding (these will be much smaller). The only thing I can think of for using 12 diodes for the FW rectifier is to spread the heat load around. You'll have more diode capacitance, but that's likely not an issue in this application. Of course if they're going through that much trouble, why not use SCRs or ideal diodes? You'll get much better efficiency. Probably it's too hard to protect the mosfets in the ideal diode circuit from the transients. I found a patent US6731081 (assigned to Denso) about this that uses SBDs and mosfets which (among other things) have lower voltage drop (and heat) than your standard silicon diodes.

There are batteries that actually run both 12/16V where you only need the regular 12v charging system but connect the 16v side to the starter so it spins faster and helps start the engine faster. The guys over at Team boosted used one in their one rotor roadster (those guys are fans of yours)

I didn't see the stator, or wire cage being wound do they import these, Japan? I take it these have to be brushed syatens also? I am thinking this would be an issue at high RPM especially for long periods. Since they don't cast and you didn't mention pricing they must be expensive. Measuring currents in the right places to see where the losses really are might have saved you purchasing. Or maybe you already did that right? Or it just becomes a band aid solution.
