yes those are the impact absorbers. If their not within spec it will determine weather the vehicle gets a rebuilt title or not bcs the vehicle will not collapse in an accident the same was as it should out the factory and compromise passenger safety.

So if someone blows the stop sign and you smash into them with your C8 and crush your front end. The body shop can not fix your car? That is just messed up. And to find out that you could have a flaw in the LT2 engine from the factory. Yep I'm not buying the C8 Corvette. One of the cylinders does not make it all the way to the top of the block. The LT2 has a slightly longer stroke then the LT1. And Your LT2 engine some how got a LT1's connecting rod. OOPS.

What alloy is that frame made of? Not all alloys of aluminum can be welded and maintain any strength.
Mike H
Mike H پیش 3 ماه
You weld aluminum and it loses it's tensile strength. The part will become like a wet noodle in the area that was heated. Not what we want for a car frame. It may look OK but if appearance was all that mattered we might all have strange orange hair and be wearing spray tans.

Sorry but repair seems an amateurish DIY bodge, that repair needs to start on a jig, you cant guess alignment, neither can you put a ram directly on an aluminium (or steel) frame without doing further damage. All this on a high performance vehicle? Thanks for the resale warning!
bobspurloc پیش 3 ماه
To clear a totaled title u need to show pictures of what and how you fixed the damage. so yeah, unless u pay off the inspector they aren't going to clear the title. so it's a track only car unless u move to a state that doesnt care. then find an insurance company who will insure a totaled title car. then when u get a tax bill for a $100k C8 u can then flip the perspective and let them know the car worthless its a totaled title.
bobspurloc پیش 3 ماه
yor best chance was letting VTuned try and straighten those FRAME RAILS. but u dont appear to know those are called frame rails. he hammers the dimples as he pulls on the frame machine.

Hey rob, I watch your videos regularly and I love seeing where you take your projects. But just for future frame straightening, as you push or pull frame rails out, tap around the bent area of the rail with a sledge hammer to help relax it so it doesn't jump back to where it was when you started, also always push the frame about 2 inches further then you need it to be because it will always jump back a couple Inches once you release it so it'll he right where you need it. If you were closer to me in Florida I would've had you bring it to me and I would've put it on the frame machine and straighted it for you easily, I'm an autobody repair technician, but anyways keep up with the awesome videos man!

The extrusions in that forward area are crash absorbers...aside from supporting panels and the front end assembly, they don't contribute to the torsional or structural integrity of the chassis, nor do they support suspension/steering, the cast members do. All the true structure is built from the center capsule out. The extruded ends have boxed the outer rails on all Corvettes since C7, though became more modular in C7. Those simple extrusions can be bent back/reinforced or even just fabbed out of plate and TIG'd on. I wouldn't over sweat it at all....easily fixable without GM shit.
First Last

Somebody is defiantly going to get killed in this thing if rob continues trying to repair this frame. Once a crumple zone crumples you can not just bend it out and weld on some flat stock. The next guy will get in an accident and those reenforced front frame pieces will come right through the firewall and impale the occupants.

I'm GM parts manager. The parts are on restriction, which basically means, they are not available to stock as a regular stocking part, or requires proof of ownership before GM will sell, or in this case, professional installation is required and not for sale to an individual or shade tree. The part #'s in question are 84557545 and 84557544. GM has plenty of stock, however before GM would sell these proper documentation would have to be submitted to them before they would approve. If the info was forged or falsified the selling dealer would reap the procussions of doing so and face fines, penalties or loss of certain privilege's. The reason they do this is to avoid lawsuits. If these are installed improperly it could result in a crash or some other unacceptable failure. And as unscrupulous as some attorneys are, they might seek to blame GM for selling a defective part that caused the failure. When in fact it was installed improperly. Don't hate the player, hate the game.

So please don’t mis-understand my intentions. I have wreck rebuilt cars since 1980. I have the FAA certified Aircraft including structures and power plant training, know how to tig weld most everything but copper. That said this aluminum is hydro formed into shapes. That is a controlled bending process. In addition it’s heat treated to give flexibility without failure, when aluminum is over bent it micro cracks, some micro cracks with controlled heat treating can be fused back together. Aluminum also work hardens so when it’s bent it wants to stay where it’s at. When you weld aluminum you can make a surface weld that looks like it’s correct but it’s not and the new heat will damage the heat treating of the material in the region. Lotus learned this, can am racing teams learn this, many people have died on these failures. Very Few aluminum components are welded in aircraft most are riveted, bonded or bolted. The 928 Porsche, Lotus have a all aluminum chassis and when they are wrecked it’s likely it will never see anything but a wrecking yard for parts removal. Because it can’t be trusted. The method you used is fine for most steels except for high strength steel like what ford uses on the mustang. Because the grain structure is altered and can fail catastrophically. Most race cars have tube frames of heat treated chrome moly steel tubing, unless they use carbon fiber or riveted and bonded aluminum. I hope this is clear to you. To repair this is both art and science and specific tested solutions. I love cars, I mean I have loved them and owned amazing cars and you want to live to drive another day. Get the pros in on this, I have seen accidents and the results that no one should see they stay with you forever. Risk cheep gas, risk dive bar food, but this is a 200mph rocket don’t risk your life, your future both legal and health wise. When a helicopter I work on falls out of the sky every part I touch has my name on it, if the work I did is the cause of the crash the result is my career/future as I know it will end, likely someone’s life ended and no one can fix it, and I will have to live with every decision. It’s not worth it. Contact Sid Morrison chassis builder out of Washington maybe he has a solution because this problem is going to come up again. Here is your chance to be a hero not a bad guy. Enjoy life it really is not that long. Mike

I suggest you contact Louis Rossman. Though his expertise is in the repair of electronics, he is currently fighting major corporations on the "Right to repair" laws that are popping up. Basically they're trying to take anyone's right to repair what they already own themselves, away from the consumer. That's why an apple iPhone costs just as much to repair as to buy new...Car companies have been working toward that goal since the day the first electronic fuel injector was installed into a 1980's GM Vehicle fyi... there might be some relevant info that is universal between cars and electronics in general that you might want to gain some knowledge of for future situations where automakers screw with you over repair parts...

Noooo , Horrendous hack job. Totally unsafe, Do the job right, have the car repaired correctly by the OE approved repairer for this chassis damage, then do the rest yourself. Should someone get injured in the future as a result of this hackery, the potential claim is HUGE, this vehicle will not respond in any future incident the way it did in this past. It will cause issues in the deployment of airbags and can create worse injuries. Terrifying.

My father was a frame mechanic for 49 years. I seen him bend, straighten, rebuild, and build from scratch many different types of vehicles. He worked on big rig trailers, dump trucks, cars, literally every kind of vehicle made. Back in the day he installed T-tops, sun roofs, moonroofs, he chopped cabs, extended cabs ECT... So you get the picture, he was a seriously bad ass frame mechanic. His view was bending/modding a steel frame was child's play. Rebending an aluminum frame was a fools game. Please be careful doing this as aluminum does not have the same integral strength steel does. You might make It look good and line up straight, but it is not going to have the structural integrity of a new part. Awesome videos, thanks for sharing, hope things work out for you and your car!

It is irresponsible to repair this car with following the OEM procedures ... clearly the car had airbags deployed. In the next crash when the airbags do not deploy correctly when the front rail extensions do not absorb energy as GM engineered I hope you understand that YOU will own 100 % of that liability. I am glad you documented this so it will be easy to identify the repair history 4 years from now. If you are giving this car away ... you will still have the liability of creating an untested and unsafe structure. PLEASE send the car to someone who knows what they are doing and have it repaired correctly.

Sorry Rob, but structural integrity of the car has been compromised. Improper repairs such as this will cause the car to collapse incorrectly thus resulting in occupant safety being compromised. Guaranteed losing lawsuit if in another accident. Also without proper measuring and repair techniques, vehicle drive ability and handling will likely be affected. Unsafe...this is why many states have laws governing such repairs. I applaud your ingenuity, though.
hope you don't resell the car if your keeping fine but if your going to flip it part it out. not being able to buy parts is going to get a lot worse unless your a certified repair facility in the next couple of years you wont be buying any safety related parts period.
